Director/Head Coach - Misty Sano
Misty Sano returns for her 19th season as coach for the Coastal Christian Varsity team. Misty brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Ocean’s Elite volleyball program. She has been teaching and coaching for over 30 years, both at the high school and collegiate levels. Her teams and players have experienced the highest levels of success.
She has served as an Assistant Coach at Azusa Pacific, University of La Verne and Texas A&M International. Misty has coached high school league champions and has been to 5 CIF Finals.
In club her teams finished in the Elite 8 Nationally for eight straight seasons. Misty’s players have garnered All-league, All-CIF and All-American honors, with many going on to compete at the collegiate level.
Co-Head Coach - Melanie Mayes
Melanie Hathaway Mayes has been playing volleyball for more than 25 years and wanted to pass on her passion for the game by coaching. She started playing volleyball at the club level when she was in sixth grade. She played for Central Coast Volleyball Club in Santa Maria then for SLO Jrs.Volleyball Club in San Luis Obispo. She was a Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50" selection and decided to play college at Cal Poly under Steve Schlick and Marlon Sano. She helped with the resurgence of the Mustang volleyball program with three berths into the NCAA Tournament, and her senior year was an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. Melanie is still among the leaders in a number of statistical categories for the Mustangs including, kills per set, career total kills, aces per set, digs per set, and career total digs.
After her collegiate career was finished, she was asked to join the U.S. National Women's Volleyball Team where she played under coach Toshi Yoshida.
Melanie graduated from Cal Poly in 2001, married her husband Jeremiah Mayes and has two children, Lucas, and Ali. Melanie seeks to teach her athletes a passion for the game and how to play it with integrity. She also wants to teach them the importance of teamwork and how to build relationships that will last a lifetime.
Coach - Madison Sano
Madison Sano played volleyball for Coastal Christian School for four years, and throughout her high school years played for Ocean’s Elite Volleyball Club. After one collegiate season she turned to coaching and being a referee, gaining experience in all aspects of the sport. This is her 4th season as a coach for Ocean’s Elite and she is excited to share her passion for the sport with these young athletes.
